Click on the link above to see recent photos of the Town's new Highway Department campus that's now under contruction at 985 Hook Road. Crews have been busy preparing the site and just recently started work on the foundation for what will be the highway garage. The project has been in the works since 2010. The building will replace the existing highway garage on Collett Road, adjacent to the Town Park. The Town has outgrown the current, aging building and the property offers little to no room for expansion. The building is going up without a marked increase in property taxes because the town has been saving for some time, knowing it would be needed.

Get fit in the great outdoors

Whether you’ve faltered with your new year’s resolution to get in shape or are a seasoned athlete, consider trying a new exercise program offered by Farmington Recreation.

Next month the town will offer “Outdoor Adventure Boot camp” in Mertensia Park. It’s a high intensity, results-driven conditioning class performed in a circuit to maximize caloric expenditure. Using the great outdoors as your playground you will jump, crunch, run, push, pull and lunge your way into shape.

The classes will be headed up by Melissa Buchanan, a certified personal trainer. They’ll be about an hour long, beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturdays from May 12 to July 7. The cost is $40 per person for the full eight weeks or $8 per class.

The boot camp will be held rain or shine. Wear sneakers and bring a towel and water. For more information, call (585) 742-5452.

View resolutions prior to vote

In compliance with a New York State law that took effect this month, the Town of Farmington has started posting resolutions to be considered by various boards prior to meeting dates. Now citizens will have the opportunity to see what their local government is considering in advance of a vote. The resolutions, whenever possible, will be posted at least one business day prior to a meeting; they will be in draft form and are subject to change. To see the Town Board's resolutions, click "Meetings/Agendas/Minutes" to the left on this page.

Communities join forces to expand trails system

Eventually, bicyclists may be able to pedal from the farthest reaches of Ontario County across the state without ever leaving a trail system that offers views of hills, valleys, streams and wildlife.

While communities like Victor, Canandaigua and Farmington have undertaken their own trails improvement and extension projects in recent years, now, in a rare collaboration, a few municipalities have joined forces to extend one of the region’s most popular multi-use trails over six miles.

The hope is to bring the just-over nine-mile Auburn Trail from its westernmost point in Monroe County beyond its current end at County Road 41 in Farmington. The plan is to extend it about six-and-a-half miles into the city of Canandaigua, where it will tie into the Ontario Pathways trail system.

The Auburn Trail would then link not only to Ontario Pathways, but also the Erie Canalway trail system, the Genesee Valley Greenway and the regional Lehigh Valley Trail, to name a few. It could also eventually link to the Finger Lakes Trail system in Geneva and its environs.

It would be possible for someone to travel on trails from the village of Phelps to Olean, Cattaraugus County or from Canandaigua to the Erie Canal in Bushnell’s Basin to Albany.

“It’s a missing link in the regional and statewide trails system that is designed for both recreation and health benefits,” said Farmington Director of Development Ron Brand, who is heading up the project. “It’s also a major economic engine from a tourism stand-point.”

The feasibility study is being overseen by a 15-member committee appointed by the Farmington Town Board, which is serving as the lead agency. On the committee’s recommendation, the board voted this past Tuesday, March 22, to hire the Rochester-based engineering firm Fisher Associates to oversee the project’s study.

Specifically, Fisher Associates will determine the best way to extend the trail to the Ontario Pathways system in Canandaigua. The project study is being paid for by a $74,000 federal grant that Brand applied for in January 2010.

The grant won approval from the Genesee Transportation Council, which represents nine counties in New York.

Additionally, the towns of Canandaigua and Farmington along with the city of Canandaigua are each contributing $2,000 toward the total $ 80,000 project.

Fisher Associates will be guided by representatives from the two towns and the city, as well Ontario Pathways, Victor Hiking Trails, Inc., the town of Victor’s Recreation Department, the Ontario County Planning Department, the state departments of transportation and environmental conservation, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Genesee Transportation Council.

The study of the project is expected to commence late this April and be completed by the end of March 2012. During this period, there will be a number of public meetings held by the Project Steering Committee. There will also be public informational progress meetings and a meeting with all identified property owners.

The project committee will look at possible revenue sources including grant funding for the actual trail construction. Depending on the outcome of the study and availability of funding, Brand hopes to see work on the trail begin within the next three years.

Mertensia Flowers

Bluebells in the spotlight

Most longtime Farmington residents know about "Bluebell Island" - actually a peninsula of Mud Creek - where the vibrant blue flower blanket the ground for just a short while in the spring. The flowers, which blanket a trail in Mertensia Park, are the focus of a feature story by local freelance writer Joy Underhill in the Spring 2010 edition of "Life in the Finger Lakes" magazine. Swap Shop organizers seeking help

"Twice is Nice"

That's one of the slogans local residents are using to promote their idea to form a community organization made up of volunteers that will recycle items that normally end up in the landfill - everything from lamps to bikes. Their goals are to divert good usable items away from the waste stream, thereby conserving valuable landfill space. Besides, one person's trash is another person's treasure! There is a special informational get together on May 19th! To learn more about the effort, including how to help out, check out their Facebook page "Farmington Community Swap Shop" or Google "Farmington Swap Shop." www.farmingtoncommunityswapshop.com

2012 budget approved

The Town Board in November approved the 2012 budget of $11.2 million, including special districts. The spending plan would maintains the tax rate of $1.06 per thousand dollars of assessed property and it is roughly $112,000 below the state's property tax cap. The Town Board, nevertheless, voted to override the tax cap as a precautionary measure. To see a summary of the budget click on the 2012 Budget Tab to the left. Direct any questions to Town Supervisor Theodore M. Fafinski at (315) 986-8193.

Town Clerk's Office now open Wednesday evenings

Town Clerk Michelle Finley has expanded her office’s business hours for the convenience of local residents.

The Town Clerk’s Office is open from 8 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. The extra hours on Wednesdays are especially geared for those who’ve found it tough to get to the Town Hall in the past, whether it’s because of work or other daytime commitments.

And the expanded hours are not just for dog licenses: Finley and her Deputy Town Clerks, Sarah Mitchell and Jennifer Finley, will also be on hand to assist with marriage licenses, handicapped parking permits, hunting licenses and all other matters they normally attend to.

Anyone with questions may contact Finley at (315) 986-8100.
